- 2.
My blood went cold, but survival instincts
kicked in.
We couldn’t fight him.
I ran to the window and leaped.
When I landed, I felt a sharp pain shoot from
my ankle to my calf.
But there was no time.
I gritted my teeth and stood up.
I was running full speed to the Pierons.
I ignored the frigid air and my feet freezing.
I just ran, running.
Last time, there were more than one intruder
in the house.
I finally collapsed at the gates of the Pierons,
beating on the metal and shouting, “Percy!
Open up! Help! Intruders! Save my mom!”
Finally, the gate creaked open, and Percy
Piersons stood there, frowning.
He wore an expensive cashmere coat, but his
face was like stone.
He looked down at me.
“Lizzie Caldwell, your acting is getting
better.”
He sounded cynical.
My blood pounded in my chest and my head
swam.
“Percy! I’m not kidding! My mom is in
danger!”
“Please! Send someone to save her!”
He studied my cuts and scrapes.
“If your brother hadn’t told me you were so
jealous of Brittany that you’d pull something
like this, I might have believed you.”
“Don’t listen to Chad! It’s real!”
“I’ve already called 911, but they’re not here
yet. Please, my mom is bleeding out!”
The last time the three thugs tortured my
mom and me.
I was nearly murdered. and my mom became
This time, I had to save her.
I showed Percy my call log to the police.
He didn’t believe me.
“Wow, you really went all–in on this. I almost
believe you.”
“Percy! Are you crazy? It’s real!”
I screamed and tears blurred my eyes.
But he didn’t care.
He turned to leave, and I grabbed him.
“Please! My mom needs help! If you don’t go,
she could die! Please!”
Before Brittany, Percy and I were friends, and
he was so kind.
Even after we were engaged, he was loving.
But when Brittany showed up, everything
changed.
Percy became cold, and Chad distanced
himself.
He was always sucking up to Brittany, and he
did some crazy stuff to impress her.
He even ruined a company for having the
same name as her dog, and that is why we
were targets.
I kneeled in the snow, begging,
<
“Percy, please! Just send someone to my
house! Please!”
“Even if you want to break off the
engagement, save my mom!”
I prayed, hoped Percy had a heart.
The butler, who has watched me grow up,
was a little sympathetic.
“Sir, go check it out. Miss Lizzie wouldn’t lie
about something like this.”
Percy hesitated, and I seized the opportunity.
I hit my head on the ground.
“Please, help my mom!”
Percy finally spoke, “I’ll send some men.”
“But, Lizzie, if this is a game, you will regret
it.”
I looked up, hope flickering in my eyes.
At least he was going!
He summoned his security, and his phone
rang.
It was Chad.
Percy glanced at me and hit speaker.
Chad’s casual voice came through, “Lizzie
didn’t come to you, did she? Don’t listen to
her. Someone threatened to kill me and Mom.
It’s hilarious.”
く
I felt numb.
Chad, who swore to protect me, was so cold.
For a woman, he didn’t care about Mom and
ignored me.
I snapped, “Chad! Are you insane?! What if
we die? You’ve seen us hurt!”
He laughed, “You just want control!”
“I asked the housekeeper, she said
everything’s fine.”
“You are cold and heartless, and I won’t
believe you!”
“If anything happens to Mom, it’s your fault!”
<
I was crushed.
The housekeeper went home weeks ago.
I wanted to argue, but the line went dead.
Percy’s face hardened, he glared at me.
“You lied! Someone, break her legs and teach
her a lesson!”
The guards hesitated.
I snarled, “You wouldn’t dare! When my dad
gets back, you’re screwed!”
Percy laughed, grabbing a baseball bat.
He looked down at me with mockery.
“They wouldn’t, but I will.”
I scrambled back, but he kicked me down.
My stomach hurt.
Then he slammed the bat against my leg.
“AH!”
I screamed, shaking.
He stood there.
“That’s the price of lying.”
Then my phone rang.
He picked it up and grinned.
“Let’s see who this is.”
“Hello, is this Miss Lizzie who called 911?”
“We’re at your house. The intruders escaped.
Your mother is in critical condition and needs
immediate medical attention.”
