“Mitchell, you have to wake up. If you wake up, I swallow my pride and beg Heather to come see you.” Vanessa’s voice wavered, full of desperation. “But if you stay unconscious like this, you’ll never get the chance to see her again…”
Maybe it was Vanessa’s words that finally got through to him. With a deep, strained breath, Mitchell struggled awake, gripping Vanessa’s hand with what little strength he had left.
“Mom… I want to see Heather….
Those words seemed to drain every ounce of energy from him.
Destiny had tried to lure Heather back, yet even saying that Ian was gravely ill had failed to move her. Mitchell didn’t know what more he could possibly do.
Vanessa had always treated Heather like a daughter, and Heather, so soft–hearted, had always been so kind to her. Maybe this time, Vanessa really could convince Heather to return.
Looking at Mitchell’s anguished expression, Vanessa hesitated for a moment before agreeing to immediately call Heather, her resolve weakening in the face of her son’s suffering.
The phone rang twice before it was abruptly hung up. Vanessa redialed, her hands trembling as she did so, unwilling to give up.
Finally, after several attempts, Heather reluctantly picked up the phone.
Vanessa, fearing the call would be cut off again, quickly spoke, her voice barely a whisper and thick with pleading, “Heather, I don’t know what else to do. Please, don’t hang up. I’m begging you…”
Hearing the catch in Vanessa’s voice, Heather sighed inwardly. Despite everything, she couldn’t bring herself to end the call immediately. But after all she had been through, it was hard to feel warm toward Vanessa anymore.
Her tone was distant, guarded. “Mrs. Bennett, what’s this about? Why are you calling me?”
Though Vanessa hadn’t said it yet, Heather already knew. There could only be one reason for the call–Mitchell.
Sure enough, the next moment, Vanessa’s voice came through, laced with sorrow.
“Heather, ever since you left, Mitchell has been searching for you. He did hurt you in the past, and he knows it now… Can you… can you give him another chance? Or at least see him one more time?”
