Vanessa, waiting outside, had an uneasy feeling rise in her chest the moment she saw Colin walk in.
So, when Heather and Colin decided to leave, Vanessa didn’t hesitate for a second and blocked their path.
“Heather, you’re leaving already? Is this person your friend?”
Heather’s patience with Vanessa was a little more than with Mitchell, but that was only in comparison to him. Ever since that night–at–the Bennetts‘ manor, when Heather had heard their conversation in the study, she couldn’t bring herself to be kind to Vanessa anymore.
Facing Vanessa’s rude question, Heather responded coolly, keeping it strictly formal, “My issues with Mitchell are over. And this is my boyfriend, Colin.”
Colin greeted Vanessa politely, but Vanessa wasn’t in the mood to respond. Instead, a trace of resentment began to build in her, and her voice carried a hint of irritation.
“Heather, you and Mitchell broke up less than two months ago, and you already… Can’t you see how much he’s suffered these past few weeks? Since you’re willing to come back to see him, why not give him another chance?”
The way Vanessa was eyeing both her and Colin made Heather frown deeply. Her expression instantly turned cold.
“Mrs. Bennett, whatever Mitchell has gone through or whatever he’s suffered has nothing to do with me. It’s all his own doing.
“I agreed to meet him out of respect for the kindness you showed me in the past. Is Mitchell allowed to have an affair, but I have to ask for your approval to move on? Mitchell had no right to expect me to explain myself.
“Mrs. Bennett, you knew about Mitchell’s affair long before I did, and you helped him keep it a secret from me. I’m not here to judge your actions, but you don’t get to ask me to forgive everything you and he did.”
