Chapter 70
The phone was quickly answered. Eddie’s voice lacked any emotion, yet it carried ant undeniable pressure through the phone. Nydia unconsciously tensed up.
“Is something wrong?” Eddie asked again.
Only then did Nydia snap back to reality and get to the point.
“Mr. Houle, back when we were
in Gromore, you promised me a favor. I’d like to hold you to that promise now.”
“Mm?” Eddie’s tone seemed to shift slightly. But Nydia didn’t have the time to speculate on his mood and pressed on.
“I need four or five bodyguards, the tough kind. It won’t take long, just about an hour.”
“Fine.” His voice grew colder again as he immediately ended the call.
Nydia was already flustered, completely unaware if he was angry. She felt relieved that Eddie was easy to talk to, not even questioning her reasons for needing bodyguards. He had agreed without hesitation.
She considered herself fortunate to have a friend like him.
At the mansion, the atmosphere in the living room immediately turned cold.
Max, who had been loyally attending to its wife and daughter, stood frozen, its fur standing on end as it instinctively shielded its family.
Even Norman, who had been playfully teasing Bella, shuddered and glanced at the couch.
That stoic figure, looking almost like an ice sculpture, had a dark, oppressive aura. It felt as though his mood could freeze the entire room.
Norman quickly hugged Max’s head, silently whispering, “You can’t see. You can’t see me.”
Thankfully, Eddie didn’t erupt in anger this time Instead, he seemed content to remain in his icy demeanor.
Norman, puzzled by the situation, quietly moved to the other side of the room. “Uncle Eddie, did you break up with someone?”
The word was one he had just learned in kindergarten. When the other kids talked about their parents having a breakup, they compared them to ice–cold and unpleasant.
Eddie shot him a cold look.
Norman shuddered instinctively. “Why did I say that?”
Luckily, just then, Wayne came in with a report. Norman took that as his cue to make a swift
exit.
“Mr. Houle, I’ve selected the five best bodyguards. I’ve already instructed them to follow Ms. Vega’s orders unconditionally today.”
The hacker incident at the hospital had made him fully aware of Nydia’s unique capabilities. So, he had been particularly focused on her matters since then.
Eddie waved his hand, signaling for Wayne to continue making arrangements.
Wayne didn’t move but instead quietly asked, “Mr. Houle, Ms. Vega suddenly requested highly skilled bodyguards. Is her safety at risk?”
“The hacker belongs to the Wolf organization. They’ll seek revenge. Should you go check on her yourself?”
Eddie acted as if he hadn’t heard Wayne’s question. He picked up a children’s storybook from the side of the couch and waved his hand at Norman.
Norman, who had been eavesdropping, froze in place.
“It’s storytime, Norman. What story do you want to hear today?”
Wayne blinked in surprise before quickly grabbing a small chair for Norman.
Norman had no choice but to sit down and prepare for the daily torture of his ears. “How about Princess Vespera?” he replied, with a tone of resignation.
“Once upon a time, there was a princess named Vespera who was cursed by a witch and fell into a deep sleep…”
Three minutes later, the story came to an end.
“The prince found the princess and leaned down…”
As he spoke, Eddie’s gaze shifted up. “… reached out and tore the princess in half, swallowing her whole.”
Norman’s face froze in disbelief. A moment later his eyes started welling up with tears.
Eddie calmly watched him, showing no sign of wanting to comfort the child. Norman cried even louder. The sound of his sobbing seemed like it could tear the roof off.
