Royce replied, “Mrs. Wilcher’s mother died during childbirth. From a young age, Mrs. Wilcher had to work in the fields just to make a living.
“Even then, she had to endure the violent beatings from her alcoholic father. She almost didn’t make it through high school, but a principal from a girls‘ school intervened, visiting her house multiple times to make sure she got the chance to study.”
In reality, Nadia’s past was simple. She was an outstanding student, and with the help of the principal, she soared to new heights. People from such backgrounds often seize every opportunity to climb higher.
But if that were truly the case, she could have been a content full–time housewife, living a life of luxury and comfort. However, Nadia insisted on working early mornings and late nights,
earning a modest salary.
“Mr. Wilcher, Mrs. Wilcher’s photo is still posted on the honor roll at that girls‘ school. She’s a role model for many. People often say they wish they could be like her, a doctor who saves
lives.”
Mick staggered slightly.
The year Ted was born, Nadia returned to work six months after her maternity leave ended. He didn’t agree. He wanted her to quit her job, which was the first time Nadia argued with him.
She kept saying she couldn’t be a full–time housewife. She had to make an impact in medicine.
He didn’t understand her determination. Their argument ended without a resolution. They spent a long time in a cold war.
Eventually, after a week, Nadia apologized in a soft voice, and he reluctantly forgave her.
The phone was on speaker, and Buck, sitting nearby and smoking, had overheard everything. He even forgot to put the cigarette back in his mouth.
It wasn’t until the ember burned his fingers that be snapped out of his thoughts.
“Mick, has Dr. Vega worked so hard all these years to be a role model for girls in the mountains?”
Life was difficult for those girls, many of whom gave up on education because of family issues.
Nadia’s desire to achieve was to let her light shine on them, to show them that if they worked hard, they could escape the mountains and walk into a brighter future.
“Mick, did we misunderstand Dr. Vega?”
Mick pressed his lips together. “So what?”

Buck could tell from his tone that the two hadn’t reconciled yet.
“You’re almost out of the cooling–off period, right? You’ll regret it if you don’t get her back.
now.”
After all, Nadia was so exceptional. Now, she was even friends with Eddie, and she would be incredibly influential in the future.
Buck decided to add fuel to the fire. “Mick, Ted can’t do without Dr. Vega either.”
Mick turned his face away, uninterested. “Kids forget easily. He’ll be fine in a few days.”
Buck sighed. It seemed there was no way to get through to him. He had no choice but to pull out his trump card.
“You had people investigate Dr. Vega, didn’t you? You suspected she married you to climb the social ladder.
“But if Dr. Vega wants to be a role model for the girls in the mountains, she could have chosen not to marry at all.
“Didn’t Lizzie say that she doesn’t want to get married and just wants to focus on her career? If Dr. Vega’s idealism and beliefs are wavering, it’s probably because she loves you too much.” Mick’s fingers trembled. The ash from his cigarette fell to the ground.
“If you really divorce Dr. Vega, many people will go after her.”
“Who cares?”
Buck casually added, “I heard the hospital is going to feature Dr. Vega in an article. Once it’s ready, they’ll send her abroad for an exchange program.”
“Mick, once she gets the divorce papers and leaves the country, you won’t even be able to chase after her.”
Mick turned to leave, his words sharp. “I said I’m divorcing her. Do you think I’m joking? She can go wherever she wants.”
Buck was about to stop him and say more, but when he looked up, he saw that Mick’s body was shaking as he walked. He had to lean against the wall just to stay upright.
Sighing, Buck thought to himself that Mick was stubborn. But what he didn’t know was that as soon as Mick left the hospital, he urgently contacted his lawyer.
After receiving the lawyer’s response, a glint of satisfaction crossed his eyes.
“So, if I don’t show up that day, she won’t be able to do anything?”
