Chapter 4
Parent–teacher meeting day.
I looked at the classmates around me, all of whom had their parents. accompanying them, and my hatred towards Ashley grew even stronger. I often wondered who was their biological child, me or Ashley.
But there was no answer.
The teacher arranged my seat, closest to the blackboard.
Parents came in one after another, and more and more eyes were fixed on
- me.
They were discussing why my parents only attended one daughter’s
parent–teacher meeting when they clearly came and ignored the other one.

What parents, they are so biased.
The homeroom teacher was the last one to enter, and when he saw the empty seat beside me, he couldn’t help but be surprised.
In my previous life, in the corner, with curious eyes here and there, I, however, felt uncomfortable and angrily left the classroom.
This time, I calmly accepted their scrutinizing gaze and said lightly, “Sorry, teacher, my parents were busy The teacher understood my situation the best and nodded with a pitying look.”
After the parent–teacher meeting ended, I, as usual, tidied up my things and went home.

But at the school gate, I saw my whole family, and their feet as if filled with lead, unable to move even half a step.
Mom took out a tissue and wiped the sweat off Ashley’s face, Dad helped her with her backpack, and even Kevin hurriedly came from college, bringing a box of chocolates for her.
I had almost forgotten the taste of chocolate.
At this moment, how I wished they would turn around and take a look, to see that they had another daughter, who had been watching them from behind.
But…
But they never turned back.
The four of them sat in the newly bought car, and I instinctively opened my phone, but there were no missed calls or messages.
I was filled with disappointment in my heart.
By the time it was past seven in the evening, they had not returned yet.
I, who was starving, chose to have a meal at a burger joint I often went to. Suddenly, my father’s phone call came.
As soon as the phone was answered, he started scolding angrily, “Where on earth did you go? It was just a parent–teacher meeting, was it necessary to be so stubborn?”
Mom snatched the phone and said anxiously, “Is it because I’m not saying what you want to hear, Katelyn? I’m sorry, where did you go?”
The sound of Ashley crying came through, “I’m sorry, Katelyn. I shouldn’t have competed with you for our parents. I’m turning eighteen soon and

can leave this home.”
Kevin said, “Do you love to come back or not, don’t think that this way we will worry about you. Ashley, you are in this home, you are not. allowed to go anywhere.”
The sound of the telephone was loud.
I had only taken a few bites of the burger in my hand when I set it down and told them I would be back soon. When I arrived home, they were all waiting in the living room to judge me.
In the living room, there was a little bit of cake left. Kevin, in front of me, fed the remaining bit to Ashley. Mom said, “We thought you would come back late, so…”
“It’s okay, I haven’t loved eating these for a long time,” I averted my gaze.
Dad slammed the table directly, “Katelyn Lambert, what’s wrong with you? Have you not seen what time it is? Why are you coming home so late!”
I tried my best to keep my tone calm and steady, “The key, who had it duplicated for me?”
As soon as these words were spoken, Dad and Mom exchanged a glance, and the emotion in Mom’s eyes clearly became flustered.
I used to have a house key, but two years ago Ashley came and they asked me to give her the key.
Mom said she would get me a new one. But in the end, they both forgot about it.
Kevin sneered, “Katelyn, don’t think I don’t understand your little tricks. Isn’t it just to make our parents feel sorry for you? If you don’t speak up for
