Nathan’s expression remained unchanged, yet I could sense his anger simmering beneath the surface.
He was truly head over heels in love with Jane!
Was he that terrified of her discovering his connection with me?
Amid everyone’s watchful eyes, I pulled out my phone and dialed a number.
Just as the call connected, Jane let out a yelp of pain.
Nathan quickly let go and apologized. “Did I hurt you?”
Jane rubbed her scalp and grumbled, “Aurora’s not calling you. Why are you so jumpy?” Only then did Nathan realize his phone hadn’t rung.
“I get jealous when you pay so much attention to another guy.”
His explanation made Jane smile sweetly, “You’re so annoying.”
I couldn’t be bothered listening to their flirtatious banter. My entire focus was fixated on the call.
I’d deliberately selected a number that was meant to be unreachable. So, how on earth had the call connected now?!
I was on the verge of hanging up when a voice sounded from the other end.
“Aurora?”
I was left dumbfounded.
It was Quinton Thompson.
“Where are you?”
His icy tone carried a faint undertone of tension.
I disregarded all that and replied reflexively, “At the Twilight Pub.”
“Wait for me.”

Quinton hung up in an instant, not giving me the chance to utter a word of refusal.
Hadn’t he gone abroad ages ago? His domestic phone number should have been
deactivated.
And what did he mean by telling me to wait for him?
I was thoroughly perplexed. I didn’t come back to my senses until one of Nathan’s friends tapped me on the shoulder.
Jane continued to smile and asked, “Is your boyfriend on his way?”
My eyes instinctively darted towards Nathan. His expression was somewhat sullen, and his tone dripped with sarcasm. “You’ve really managed to keep your boyfriend a secret.”
What he truly implied was that I was quick to move on to new men.
Typically, a man would consider dumping a woman as ridding himself of a hassle. However, upon discovering that his ex–girlfriend had a new boyfriend the next day after. break up, he was bound to fly into a rage.
Not wanting to fully goad Nathan, I remained silent.

The game carried on.
One of Nathan’s friends lost and requested that Jane and I have a drink together.

Jane was quite friendly and picked up a glass of vodka. “Aurora, we’re all college classmates.
In the blink of an eye, it’s been several years since we graduated. I really ought to have a drink
with you.”
Nathan impatiently snatched the vodka from her hand and thrust a glass of warm milk into it
instead.
“You’re on your period. You can’t drink alcohol.”
Jane blushed and shot Nathan a glare, yet she obediently held the warm milk. Her words
were a mix of playfulness and complacency.
“Sorry, Aurora. My fiancé is just too overprotective.”
I could barely keep my smile in place. I took the vodka from Nathan’s friend and downed it in one swift gulp.
The hard liquor seared my stomach as it made its way down.
I usually didn’t drink at all. At friends‘ gatherings, Nathan never allowed me to drink and
always prepared warm milk for me.
Jane held up the milk and gazed at me with a triumphant grin. I understood that she was
aware of the relationship between me and Nathan.
She was using that warm milk to assert to me that he was hers.
I smiled and stated calmly and sincerely, “That’s because he loves you. I heard that you’re getting married. Congratulations!”
I still had my dignity. A man who had toyed with me for three years wasn’t worth fighting for.
Nathan had once compared me to a hedgehog.
I had been willing to pluck out all my spines for him, but now, I could retract them back into
my body.
Even though the process was agonizing, it was the last bit of pride I had left.
“Excuse me. I need to use the restroom.”
I gritted my teeth against the pain and hobbled out of the private room.
Just as the door of the private room closed behind me, I thought I heard the sound of a vodka bottle shattering on the floor.
I splashed some water on my face beside the sink. The frigid liquid seemed to soothe the
heat that had been building up within me.
“Aurora, my patience has its limits.”
An icy voice rang out behind me. It was Nathan.
I spun around. “Nathan…”
Nathan interrupted me with a cold face, “We’re not that familiar.”
I smiled mockingly and changed the form of address. “Mr. Cooper, my grandmother’s condition has worsened, so I want…”

“Aurora, I hate greedy people the most. Your grandmother’s fate is of no concern to me! If you think you can use her as a pretext to keep hounding me. remember. I saved her once and I
