Michael scanned the room, not seeing Samuel anywhere. As he looked around, he thought: if she’s happy, if this is the life she wants, I’ll wish her well.
With Nora absent, Eliana went to get Michael some water. She could hear Emma’s shouts from upstairs. Just as Eliana brought water to Michael in the living room, she saw Samuel dragging Emma down the stairs by her ear.

“Sam, I’m your aunt! How dare you pull my ear? Let go!” she yelled, “You made my dad sick, and now you’re disrespecting me. Aren’t you afraid of it’ll come back to you?” Samuel was twenty years older than his aunt.
Upon reaching the bottom of the stairs, Samuel noticed Michael in the living room. Releasing Emma, he coldly told Michael: “Take the kid back,” he said.
Before Michael had put the glass of water to his lips, he stood up and said smiling, “No need to be harsh with children. She’s just bored, so…”
“Take her back.” Samuel’s tone left no room for argument. His attitude was ice–cold.
Michael didn’t know Samuel well. But from his arrogant attitude and disrespect for elders, he could tell this man wasn’t someone to mess with. He nodded and reached for Emma’s hand, he said, “Come on Emma, let’s go.”
But Emma pulled away, “Uncle Michael, you go ahead. I’m staying here,” she said. “My sister–in–law said I should keep an eye on him.” Emma’s sister–in–law was Samuel’s mother.
Samuel sat down on the couch, his face dark, ignoring the child’s comments. Seeing Samuel’s clearly unapproachable demeanor, Michael realized he wasn’t welcome to stay.

told Emma: “Alright, I’ll go. Call me when you want to leave, and I’ll pick you up.”
Emma raised her hand and said, “Okay, bye Uncle Michael.”
As Michael left, he couldn’t help looking at Eliana. She looked back at him. Their exchanged glance didn’t escape Samuel’s notice. Though they hadn’t spoken a word, it bothered Samuel. He eyed Eliaria, “You two know each other?” Eliana instinctively denied it, and said, “No, we don’t.”
Since they didn’t appear to know each other, Samuel let it drop. He stood up, adjusting his jacket, and told Eliana, “Take care of Emma. I’m heading to the office.” Eliana nodded and with a heavy heart, watching him leave
Then Emma spoke up, “Eli, don’t you and Sam love each other?”
Eliana turned to her young aunt, forcing a smile, “Of course we do,” she said.
“But if you love each other,” Emma asked, “Why won’t you have a baby?”

Emma took Eliana’s hand, and led her to the couch. Speaking with surprising maturity, she said, “My brother and sister–in- law sent me to check on you two. They want me to tell you that you must change Sam’s mind about having children. She looked calmly into Eliana’s eyes and said, “The the only way you’ll secure your place in the Nelson family is by having a child.”
Though only then, Emma understood a lot. She knew Eliana was an orphan, without status or background, and hadn’t even finished college. For a girl like her to keep her respected position as Mrs. Nelson, having a child was her only option. How else could she compete with all those well–bred ladies wanting to marry into the Nelson family?
Eliana smiled sadly, not taking her aunt’s words too seriously. As someone about to leave Samuel, what use to her was securing a position in the Nelson family? She didn’t need Gucci bags or Manolo Blahnik shoes or the Nelson title. All she wanted was Samuel’s wholehearted love. But that seemed like a fantasy now. She just needed to wait for Samuel to bring the new divorce papers for her to sign. Then she’d leave, disappearing from Samuel’s world.
“Why do you look so unhappy? Don’t you want me here?” Emma asked, blinking her big eyes.
Eliana forced a smile, pushing down her pain, she said, “No, no, of course I want you here.”
“Then let’s go!” Emma jumped up, excited. “Show me around,” she said, “And prepare a room for me. I’m staying for a few days!”
“Okay.”
With only ten years between them, they got along well. They headed upstairs hand in hand.
Samuel worked at the office until 7 PM and then left. In the car park, his phone rang. It was Chloe. “Sam,” she said, sobbing over the phone, “can you come to the hospital? I’m scared.”
Samuel frowned impatiently, he said, “I’m not done here. Stay puf – isn’t Nora with you?”
Chloe wasn’t listening. She said, “But I miss you, Sam. The doctor says I’m fine.” She asked, “Can I come over tonight?”
His driver, Ethan, was holding open the door of the BMW. Samuel said brusquely. “Not tonight. We have family visiting- you’ll only make things worse.” He got into the back seat and checked his watch. “I have to go,” he said.
Before Chloe could respond, Samuel hung up and told his driver to head back to Regal Garden Villa.
At the hospital, Chloe stared at the ended call, her face darkening as she gritted her teeth. If he thought he could get rid of her, he was wrong. Family visiting? Perfect timing. Hearing movement at the door, Chloe looked up excitedly, “Nora, Nora, I think I can see!
Nora rushed to her bedside, thrilled, “Really? Ms. Howard, you can see?”
“Yes, I can see! Quick, let’s pack up and go home. We’ll surprise Sam!”
