She had never received flowers before.
In school, a boy had tried to woo her by giving her all kinds of flowers, but she hadn’t accepted a single one. After getting married, she had brought up to Jacob in a roundabout manner that she’d like to be gifted a bouquet.
What had been his reply at the time?
He had told her, “If you like flowers, you should buy them yourself. Liesel, you’re no longer a young girl.”
Thinking of these words, Liesel’s eyebrows knitted together lightly. The smile on her face. was now tinged with bitterness.
She never thought that the first bouquet she’d receive would be given to her by another man after her divorce.
Liesel hugged the flowers close to her chest and walked back to the office with heavy footsteps. She got off the elevator on the seventh floor. It was then that she saw Jacob. sitting on a couch in the corner. He was talking on the phone. It seemed to be about something urgent.
Hearing the elevator ding, he looked up casually. His dark gaze seemed stunned for a moment, but a brief moment later, he gave her a businesslike nod.
Having been together for three years, they had developed a tacit understanding between. them. Liesel walked over and took the phone from Jacob’s hand.
Glancing at the caller’s number, Liesel began to talk with a warm smile on her face. She immediately picked up where he’d left off in the business discussion.
She sat down next to him while still holding the bouquet of Blue Enchantress hydrangeas.
The vibrance of her flowers complemented her pale skin. It highlighted the coldness and pridefulness in her face.
Frowning, Jacob averted his gaze. He picked up a document from the table and flipped through it, all the while still listening to her discussion with Miles Vonce.
The two of them sat next to each other, inches apart, as if a rift had never formed between
them
When Natalie came downstairs, she found them like this.
She bit her lip and felt incredibly threatened by what she saw
Even though Jacob told her that she was different from Liesel, she knew what their bond had been like in the past three years. Even though the tacit understanding they shared wasn’t deeply ingrained in their souls, they had still been tightly intertwined with each other.
Just like right now even though she was clearly standing there, it still felt like there was a huge chasm separating her from them.
She couldn’t approach them nor force her way in.
Natalie’s gaze dimmed, and she clenched her fists.
After Liesel hung up, she gave Jacob a brief summary of the reason Miles had called.
Now knowing the reason, Jacob nodded. His eyes landed on the bouquet of flowers, and be said indifferently, “You accepted Elijah’s gifts.
After a short pause, he caught sight of the red agate necklace in the gift box.
That shade of crimson was striking, vibrant, and passionate.
In his eyes, Liesel had always been cold, prideful, and inconspicuous.
She wouldn’t like this color.
“Don’t you hate red? Why did you still accept the present?” he asked in an aloof voice.
Did she hate red?
It was actually her favorite color.
It was just that in the past, she had wanted to match Jacob’s favorite, which was why she had changed all her jewelry to blue.
Now that they were divorced, she wanted to live for herself.
She bent her head to sniff the bouquet. In an amused tone, she said, “If you had paid attention to me, you would know that my closet is filled with red dresses. My favorite color has always been red.”
Beaming, she removed the necklace from its box. Under Jacob’s watchful gaze, she slowly put it on herself as if in silent retaliation against him.
