“He doesn’t care about the consequences because he knows you’ll back him up.” Liesel revealed a gentle smile reminiscent of the days before their divorce.
However, Jacob knew that underneath her calm gaze was an indistinct chill.
“Are you sure it was Jeffrey’s doing? He looked at her and asked softly, “Why would he do that?”
A faint laugh escaped from her lips as she slowly traced the silky material of the red dress. She had fallen in love with it since the moment Jacob gifted it to her. In a way, that was his first
proper present to her.
In three years of their marriage life, she had never once received any gifts from him. Despite occasionally hinting at him that she wanted surprises, all she received was a black
credit card.
Now that she had finally received her first present, it got destroyed just like that.
What did that signify? Was it a hint to her that she and Jacob would never belong together?
The relationship was synonymous with the red dress–luxurious, elegant, and noble in public, yet ultimately unable to escape a miserable fate.
“You’re asking me why he’d do that.” Liesel looked at him, and her eyes flashed. “Can’t you tell?”
Her gaze fixated on him as she slowly explained, “Because I’m no longer under his control nor am I his puppet anymore. I’m not the child of his lover. Instead, I’m the pawn while Natalie is the apple of his eye.
“Everyone in the circle knows I was your wife, and those who don’t will recognize me as your executive secretary. Regardless of my positions, I’m way ahead of Natalie in all aspects, aren’t I?”
Liesel was full of confidence. “Now that Natalie is with you and has become your secretary, she’ll likely be your plus–one in future parties. By then, everyone will compare us. Whether it’s becoming your secretary or future wife, she will be scrutinized.
“If I happen to have any scandals right now, people will naturally think Natalie is better than me and that you’d made the right choice.” She turned to him and asked, “You really can’t figure out something as simple as this?”
The coldness in her eyes overflowed as she caressed the red dress. “What a simple plan- knowing that the news of me being stripped bare in front of all the elites would spread throughout the social circles in Ashthorne and turn me into a laughing stock.
“When people talk about me in the future, their last impression will be… the naked woman
at the dinner party. All of my positive qualities will be drowned out.”
Jacob stayed silent still.
“So, what’s the point of asking me who did it?” Liesel gazed at him with visible mockery.” Will you actually do something to Natalie’s father?”
He wouldn’t deal with Jeffrey for Liesel’s sake, of course. Despite beinig possessive of her, he would always regard Natalie above her. Harming Jeffrey was equivalent to harming Natalie.
That was something Liesel knew well–that Jacob would never stand up for her.
Her smile faded. “Do you think Natalie is aware of what her father is doing?”
Her question seemed to be deliberate and casual at the same time.
