“System, I would like to request to leave this world.”
The system materialized upon being summoned. “Carter, your request has been approved. You have two weeks to bid the family members you have in this world a final farewell.”
The system vanished right after saying that.
Meanwhile, at the mention of family members, Carter Grant paused for quite a while. He slowly turned his gaze toward the family photo placed on a nearby table.
In the photo, Carter’s wife and daughter looked at him, who stood in the middle, lovingly as they planted a kiss on his cheeks.
He was lost in thought as he stared at that happy moment captured in the photo.
No one knew that Carter was actually a Player. Ten years ago, the system brought him into this world to make Selene Miller, a lady belonging to one of the most prominent families in the city he had arrived in, fall for him.
Over the last ten years, they went from being schoolmates to getting married. Not only did Carter manage to complete the quest successfully, but he had also fallen in love with his target.
That was why he hesitated when the system asked him if he would like to leave this world and return to the real world immediately.
Selene was deeply in love with him. Carter couldn’t imagine her having the strength to continue living if she were to lose him then.
Therefore, he chose to postpone leaving. He remained in this world, married Selene, and had a child with her.
Selene loved Carter so much that she often gave him expensive cars worth millions of dollars as gifts.
By 7:00 pm every day, she would get home on the dot. Carter always received a kiss from her before he went to bed and after he woke up in the morning. Even when Selene was speaking to someone else, the conversation would always revolve around him.
When Selene went into labor, Carter rushed to the hospital but got into a car accident on the
way.
After delivering the baby, Selene spent long hours waiting outside the operating room. Her hands shook each time she was asked to sign the liability waivers.
At some point, Selene even wrote a will saying that she would take her own life if Carter didn’t manage to survive the operation.
Carter finally regained consciousness after being in a coma for three days. The first thing he saw was Selene crying and kneeling beside the bed as she clutched his hand.
“Carter, if something were to happen to you, I would choose to leave our child and this world behind to be with you!”
While he was recuperating, Selene had given up a billion–dollar deal just because she was worried about his condition. She stuck close to him and their child during that time.
Their daughter, Harper Miller, grew to be very attached to Carter, with Selene being a major
influence in her life.
Every day after coming back from kindergarten, Harper would run to Carter and peck him on the cheek. She would circle her arms around his waist and share what happened at the kindergarten that day.
At night, she and Selene would lay on either side of Carter and listen to him read bedtime
stories.
Selene would bring home a bouquet of flowers for him every day. Harper copied what her mother did and gave him a bouquet every day as well.
Yet, the mother–daughter pair, who had showered Carter with love and affection, kept him in the dark and formed a new “family” with Selene’s secretary in the fifth year of Carter and Selene’s marriage.
Selene had purchased a villa for her secretary, Adrian Jennings, at Laconia Bay, and the property was placed under both of their names. The two of them would meet there almost every other day.
Harper would bring Adrian gifts each time she went to meet him. She would even peck him on the cheek and cling to him, saying how much she liked him.
There were countless nights when Selene and Harper would wait after Carter was asleep and head over to Adrian’s place to keep him company
Selene had broken all of her promises. After learning the truth, Carter had no intention of staying in this world anymore. He no longer wanted to be with Selene and Harper.
Carter slowly wiped away the tears from the corners of his eyes. After putting the frame containing their family photo face down on the table, he got up and went upstairs to pack his belongings.
He gathered all of the things Selene and Harper had given him throughout the years. There were enough to fill up two big boxes.
The villa looked empty after he had finished packing those things. He could easily see the end
of the hallway without any obstacles in the way, just like how he could already see the end of his five–year marriage.
The delivery man Carter had hired showed up outside the villa just as he was done moving those two boxes to the front door.
He sent Adrian’s address to the delivery man’s phone and reminded him. “Please send these boxes to this address two weeks from now.
“Can you also pass on a message to the receiver? Tell him that I’m giving these things to him, including my wife and my child. He can have them too.”
“Carter, what did you say you were giving away?”
Carter glanced over his shoulder the second he heard that voice. He could see Selene and Harper standing by the door. They were each holding a bouquet of flowers in their arms.
