Chapter 13
Selene’s heart clenched when she saw Harper in this state. She could barely breathe through the pain. If she hadn’t been so impulsive, Harper wouldn’t have ended up like this.
She opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out. In the end, she patted Harper on the head and said bitterly, “You’re right; we were wrong. That’s why Daddy left us. We have to find him and apologize to him.”
But where could they look?
From October to December, for two whole months, the Miller family sent out countless people to search for Carter, yet no one found him.
Until one day, Selene’s assistant, Ethan Brown, called her. “Ms. Miller, we found Mr. Grant.”
Selene and Harper tuned out the rest of Ethan’s words. They just jotted down the address he gave them and rushed over.
When they arrived at their destination, both of them were stunned, because they found themselves at the crematorium.
Selene’s face darkened. She grabbed Ethan by the collar. “Are you playing with me? How could Carter be at the crematorium?”
Ethan looked sorrowful as he handed her a stack of papers. “Look at this, Ms. Miller.”
Selene took the papers in confusion. When she saw the diagnosis on the health report and the confirmation slip from the crematorium, she staggered backward and collapsed into a chair
behind her.
She couldn’t believe what she was seeing. The papers showed that Carter had been diagnosed with a terminal illness a long time ago, and he had reserved himself a spot at the crematorium two weeks ago.
Two weeks ago…
Wasn’t that the same time she had visited the crematorium with Adrian?
At the time, she’d asked Carter why he was here, but he’d brushed off her questions. Meanwhile, she had been so focused on Adrian that she hadn’t thought much about it.
Selene clutched the papers tightly as she started to tremble uncontrollably.
Harper burst into tears when she heard that Carter was dead.
One of her classmates in kindergarten had been absent for a while. She remembered asking her teacher about it, and her teacher had told her that her classmate’s father had died in a car
accident.
Harper didn’t know what dying was. She just knew that when someone died, they would never come back, and she would never be able to see the person again.
Was Carter never coming back? Would she never see him again?
The shock was too much for her little body to handle, and Harper passed out from crying too hard. Instinctively, Selene tried to grab her, but as soon as she stood up, she coughed up a
mouthful of blood.
It was the Miller family’s second funeral in 30 years.
Before this, it was Frank’s first wife who had died of illness. This time, it was Selene’s husband.
The guests at the funeral gossiped amongst themselves
Both died of illnesses. Was it because Frank and Selene had cheated on their respective partners and caused their deaths?
Selene sat before Carter’s portrait silently. All she could think of was what Ethan had told her at the crematorium. He had told her that Carter had gone to the crematorium alone to reserve a slot for himself.
The staff at the crematorium had asked him if his family knew about this, and he had said that there was no need for them to know. He had instructed the staff to scatter his ashes directly. He didn’t even want to keep his ashes in an urn.
Selene laughed out loud bitterly, tears falling down her cheeks. It was only when she went home to pack up Carter’s belongings that she realized how much he hated them.
He hadn’t left anything to her and Harper. He had even deleted all photos of him from her phone. The photo that they had used for the funeral had been provided by the police.
He really hated them that much.
Selene buried her face in her hands and burst into tears.
Ever since she found out that Carter was dead, Harper had been running a constant fever. She was so sick that she couldn’t even attend Carter’s funeral.
Even though Selene had brought in many doctors to treat her, the illness still took a toll on her. She had to withdraw from school and recuperate at home.
