Chapter 14
Whatever happened in that world had nothing to do with Carter now.
system:
After returning from his mission, the
gave him his reward–a hundred million dollars. He checked his bank account through his phone several times before rolling around his bed, laughing in glee.
In the real world, Carter was an orphan. He only managed to complete his tertiary education thanks to the support of a benefactor.
On the way to thank his benefactor, he had gotten into a car accident. The system had pulled him into other worlds to complete missions. In order to survive, he accepted the mission of winning over Selene’s heart.
It was the first time that he had ever been in a relationship. Inexperienced as he was, he had fallen head over heels for her just from a few sweet words from her.
He’d refused the opportunity to return home after the mission ended, choosing instead to marry Selene and start a family with her.
In hindsight, he wanted to slap his past self for his foolishness.
Thankfully, that was all over now. He didn’t want to dwell on the past.
Carter sat back up and looked at himself in the mirror. He had spent ten years in the other world, but only a year had passed in the real world, which meant that he was only 23 years old
here, not 27.
After his car accident, he had fallen into a coma. His benefactor had visited him several times. He looked around at the gifts in his room and decided to go to his benefactor’s company to apologize in person.
Perhaps worried that he would get into another accident, his benefactor decided to send someone to escort him this time.
When Carter arrived at his destination, he found out that his benefactor was Nancy Jensen. The Jensens were the most powerful family in the city.
Feeling strangely nervous, he clenched his fists tightly.
Back in the other world, Selene’s family, the Millers, had been high in society as well. However, compared to the Jensens, the Millers were nothing.
The secretary that had welcomed him into the office was warm and courteous. She brought him to a lounge to wait and even made him a cup of tea.
‘Please wait a moment, Mr. Grant. Ms. Jensen is still in a meeting. She will see you in 15 minutes. Meanwhile, please make yourself comfortable, and feel free to call me if you need.
anything.”
“Alright, thank you.”
Exactly 15 minutes later, Nancy appeared.
It was the first time Carter had seen a famous person in real life. Previously, he’d only ever seen her on the television. Unbidden, he stood up. “Hello, Ms. Jensen. I am Carter Grant. You sponsored my education.”
Nancy smiled, the curve of her lips just right, giving her an elegant and serene air. It made her feel approachable. “No need to be so formal, Mr. Grant. Have a seat.”
When she heard that he was here to thank her, Nancy thought for a moment before saying cautiously, “If you really want to show your gratitude, Mr. Grant, I do have a request. Would you be willing to help me?”
“Please, ask away.
‘My brother and his wife recently passed away, leaving behind a son. I adopted him, but being a woman, there are a lot of things about raising a boy that eludes me. So, I want to ask if you are willing to marry me and be the child’s father.
“Don’t worry. I won’t interfere in your personal life after marriage. I just need you to help met raise the child. If you’re not amenable to the suggestion, please just forget about it.”
She looked at him nervously. She knew that the request was rather sudden, but she had a feeling that he was the right person from the moment she had laid eyes on him.
Just as Nancy was observing Carter, Carter was also studying her.
The Jensens were a family of virtue, with generations of people upholding loving,
monogamous relationships without scandals. Nancy herself had turned down many men who had pursued her; she was firm yet tactful with her rejections.
After a while, Carter asked, “Can I meet him?”
