Chapter 16
Ever since leaving the other world, Carter hadn’t seen the system again. He assumed it had disappeared and gone back to wherever it came from, but one morning, a bright ball of light appeared before him once again.
“Good morning, Player. The mission world is crumbling. You will need to return once more.”
After a series of explanations from the system, Carter found out that after he left, Selene’s career had gone straight down the drain after her affair had been exposed. Frank Miller had taken back the position of CEO. As a result, she became a recluse and an alcoholic.
Meanwhile, Harper got sick after hearing about his death. She had to withdraw from school and needed a lot of medicine.
Adrian had been sent abroad by Selene.
However, he was too used to a life of luxury, so he was unable to adapt; he resumed his old. ways and became a rich woman’s lover. Unfortunately, his lover’s husband wasn’t as forgiving as Carter. He had disfigured Adrian and sent him to a sweatshop, where he would likely spend the rest of his life.
The system also told him that if he refused to go to the mission world, Selene and Harper would come over to the real world.
Carter didn’t want the two of them to taint his current life. After some thought, he decided to return to the mission world.
The system said that all he needed to do this time was sever his remaining ties with them and prove to them that he was better off without them. If he succeeded, Selene and Harper would face more severe punishment.
For convenience, the system would allow Nancy and Maddox to follow him to the other world. Nancy’s wealth and power would be replicated there. Once they were done with their mission, they could choose to either stay or come back.
After the explanation, the system disappeared.
World–hopping wasn’t something Nancy and Maddox would believe easily, so Carter needed to explain this to them carefully.
After hearing what he had to say, Nancy was only surprised for a moment. Everyone had their secrets, and she was touched that Carter was willing to tell them about this.
Maddox didn’t fully understand what was happening. He just knew that they were going to go on a trip. “Yay! We’re going on a trip!” he said, clapping.
Carter patted him on the head gently. “Yeah. You’re going on a trip with Daddy.”
“Does that mean we’re having our wedding over there?” Nancy asked.
The two of them had registered their marriage on Carter’s birthday but hadn’t held a wedding yet.
Carter touched the ring on his left ring finger. “There won’t be much difference, actually. The only thing is time–ten years there equals one year here. We’ll only be there for at most a year, which is equivalent to a little more than a month.
“We could hold the wedding there too, if you want. System gave us the clearance to send photos back to our family here.”
Nancy nodded. “Alright. Then we’ll have the wedding there.”
In the other world, the Miller residence had been shrouded in a grim atmosphere ever since Carter’s death..
The smell of medicine and alcohol permeated the air, making the servants and housekeepers nauseated.
Eventually, Frank couldn’t take it any longer. He sent them to Falance and forbade them from returning without his permission.
Selene’s actions had negatively affected Miller Corporation, sending the company’s stocks. plummeting. If it hadn’t been for Frank’s efforts, the Millers would’ve crashed and burned. disappearing from the business scene altogether.
Even now, though they survived, they were hanging by a precarious thread.
In order to prevent Selene from causing further harm, Frank decided to send her abroad to handle the less important businesses.
Harper had also been sent abroad too.
Frank didn’t like her either; she had picked up her mother’s bad habits at such a young age. He preferred to keep her out of sight and out of mind.
It took Selene two weeks to finally settle into handling the operations at Falance.
That evening, Ethan knocked on her door and told her, “Ms. Miller, the Jensen family is hosting a banquet and has invited you to attend the day after tomorrow.”
Selene’s hands froze over the keyboard.
The Jensens were a powerful family, even on the world stage. Many other families wanted to
their favor, but none have succeeded, let alone the Millers.
curry
Why would the Jensens invite her?
She took the invitation and checked it, making sure that it was really addressed to her. Then, she put it down and went back to her computer. “Understood. You may go now.”
