Chapter 17
Nancy quickly adapted to life in the other world, especially as the villa they were staying in did not look any different from the one in the real world.
Hugging Carter, she looked out over the rose garden and said, “I’ve already sent out the invitations for next week’s banquet. The Millers should have gotten it by now.”
Carter took a fresh bouquet of roses from a servant. “It’ll certainly be an interesting event.”
For a moment, his gaze turned distant.
During his mission, Selene had mostly had her affair with Adrian behind his back; he had never caught them red–handed. Even so, the knowledge of the betrayal had been painful and heartbreaking enough.
Besides, they had openly shown their affection for each other in front of him before. If they had flaunted their relationship in front of him, he didn’t know how he would’ve coped.
It was time for her to have a taste of her own medicine.
Even though the banquet was handled by professionals, Carter still wanted to choose the decor and attire for the event himself.
The three of them took a car ride to Ravoli Street, where half of the stores were owned by the.
Jensens.
Every store they selected had staff ready to escort them to a private suite, where coffee and refreshments awaited them. There were models showcasing various suits and gowns right in front of them as well.
After the show, an attendant presented a bunch of limited–edition gemstone cufflinks in front of Carter. There were so many of them that Carter was spoiled for choice.
If the banquet hadn’t been so sudden, Nancy would’ve had custom suits made for him. Nevertheless, any suit he chose today would immediately be pulled from the shelves at all stores around the world, never to be replicated again, even if it was new.
In the end, Carter chose a deep blue suit, matching it with cufflinks and a tie. When he stepped out from behind the curtain, Nancy and Maddox were stunned.
“You look good.” Nancy took his arm and kissed him lightly.
“You’re so handsome, Daddy!” Maddox joined them, taking Carter’s hand.
After more shopping, they went home laden with their purchases.
As they climbed into the backseat of the car, Nancy’s phone rang. Carter, who was just about to get into the car, turned back to her. “What happened?”

Nancy shook her head. “It’s nothing.”
Carter didn’t press further. He brought Maddox into the car with him, while Nancy had a brief conversation with the person on the other end of the phone. Then, she got into the car too.
Neither of them noticed the figure staring after them in shock.
It was Selene’s assistant, Ethan. He had come on her orders to find a gift for the Jensen family. When he exited the store he was browsing, he saw Carter.
At first, he thought that he had mistaken someone else for him.
After Carter died, the Millers had tried hiring look–alikes to help Selene move on, but none of them even made it through the door before Selene threw them out. After that, they never bothered trying anymore, no matter how much the person resembled Carter.
However, Ethan was certain that he had seen the real Carter today. He thought that he had seen a ghost–after all, he had seen Carter’s death certificate at the crematorium that day.
The staff at the crematorium had told him that they had burned Carter’s body and scattered the ashes. Then again, that man looked too much like Carter. Even the woman beside him. called him Carter.
Carter’s image haunted Ethan. When he reported back to Selene, he decided to tell her about it. “What did you say?”
