Harper’s cries were so loud that they echoed through the door. Selene rushed in, only to almost bump into Carter, who was exiting the room.
Carter just looked at her. “Let’s talk. The nurses can stay with her for now.”
In the lounge at the end of the corridor, Carter looked at Selene with mixed feelings. “Why did you cheat on me, Selene?”
When he first found out about her infidelity, it plagued him. He wondered if it was his fault, or if it was something else, or if she had other reasons. No matter how hard he thought about it, he still couldn’t understand why she had cheated on him.
If she was tired of him and simply didn’t love him anymore, she could’ve just told him. Why did she have to cheat on him with Adrian? He didn’t understand why.
Selene froze. She had imagined how their conversation would go, but she hadn’t expected him to start with this question. How was she supposed to answer?
It’d been too long. She had forgotten why she had cheated on him in the first place.
However, she knew clearly that she was the reason why their marriage had ended and their daughter had turned out the way she did.
Carter didn’t expect an answer from her anyway. Fixing his gaze on the scenery outside the window, he said calmly. “Let me tell you a secret, Selene. I’m actually a Player from another world. I came to this world with a mission, which is to win over your heart.
“Even though it was just a mission, I still gave it my all. I fell in love with you. That was why I chose to stay even after the mission ended. I gave up the opportunity to go home just so that I could marry you and have a child with you.”
The system had laughed at him at the time. It had seen many Players before him. He was the only one who had stayed because of love.
previous–Players
The system had tried to dissuade him as well, telling him that all the previous Players had left with their rewards after the mission was done. It was because they all knew why all fairytales ended at marriage–because life after marriage wasn’t as beautiful as it seemed.

Besides, if they could win over the target’s heart so easily, someone else could, too. And all, the ending that the system had written for them ended either in separation or in death.
Back then, Carter was completely hooked on Selene. He was convinced that anyone who would risk their life for him couldn’t be that bad.
But later, he realized that the person who had loved him could turn around and love someone
else.
Selene clenched her fists. Her lips trembled.
No wonder! She should’ve guessed!
-Carter had always been healthy. The Millers even had their own nutritionists who took care of
their food and diet. How could he have fallen ill all of a sudden?
If he really was a Player from another world, and he suddenly came back now, did that mean….
She looked up at him suddenly.
Just as she expected, he continued, “I came back because of you and Harper.”
Selene’s eyes lit up.
However, Carter’s face grew cold. “I left too abruptly back then and hadn’t had the time to talk to you two. I’m back here now to make things clear. After this, we’ll have nothing more to do
with each other.”
Selene’s face went pale. Pain filled her eyes. “Carter…
“Even if the accident hadn’t happened, we still wouldn’t be together, Selene. I’ve been through enough heartache. Once is enough. From the moment you opened your heart to Adrian, our marriage was already over.”
With that, he left the room without sparing her another glance.
The night was cold. Carter stared out at the scenery beyond the car window, his gaze complex.
Nancy leaned against him quietly. Neither of them spoke.
When they arrived home, a little blue bundle threw itself at them. ” “Daddy!”
Carter caught Maddox easily and lifted him up. He kissed him. “It’s late, Maddie. Why aren’t you in bed?”
Maddox wrapped his arms around Carter’s neck and shook his head. “I can’t sleep when you’re
not with me.”
Nancy walked over and patted him on the head. “Would you like us to tell you a bedtime story, then?”
In Maddox’s room, all three of them lay on the bed. Maddox was sandwiched between Carter and Nancy, listening to Carter as he told him a bedtime story.
Then, as if remembering something, he looked up at him. “Why did the person on the phone say I can’t call you Daddy? Who was she?”
Taken aback, Carter glanced at Nancy before stroking Maddox’s hair.
“That was the child I used to raise. If she hadn’t done bad things, she would’ve been your
sister. But sadly, she did something very bad, so I don’t like her anymore, and you won’t have a sister,” he said.
Young as he was, Maddox didn’t understand all this drama. He soon fell asleep.
Nancy patted Carter’s head too. “Get some sleep. Goodnight.”
