Chapter 23
Carter’s speech at the hospital had had an effect on Selene and Harper. They didn’t seek him out again, and Carter had no interest in checking on them.
He was more concerned about his wedding with Nancy.
He poured his heart out into this once–in–a–lifetime event. He’d hired all the famous fashion designers of Falance to tailor their wedding outfits. From the style of the dress to the choice of fabrics, it took over a dozen designers a whole afternoon to finalize the details.
Nancy massaged his shoulders when she saw him yawn. “Tired?”
Carter smiled. “A little.”
Though preparing for the wedding was exhausting, it was clear to see that he was happy. After all, two of the people who loved him were by his side.
On Sunday, they went to a jewelry shop to have their wedding rings custom–made. Maddox went with them, as they were planning to make him a matching bracelet as well.
The weather was nice, so they chose to walk instead of taking the car.
They were chatting happily when suddenly Carter’s smile faded. Nancy followed his gaze and saw Selene and Harper walking in front of them.
Following the doctor’s advice, Selene had also taken advantage of the good weather and brought Harper out for a walk.
The two of them had wandered quite a distance, distracted by the beautiful scenery. Just then, they bumped into Carter and Nancy, who had also brought Maddox out for a walk.
“Carter…”
“Daddy…”
Selene and Harper looked at him emotionally, and their voices were charged with guilt.
Carter didn’t even give them a second glance. He made to brush past them.
Just then, the unexpected happened. A car lost control and barrelled toward them.
It was about to hit him, but then the car veered away and swerved toward the people behind
him.
Maddox!
He turned around in an instant and pushed Maddox and Nancy away. “Watch out!”
All three of them fell to the ground.
Meanwhile, Selene and Harper watched in shock as Carter ignored them, choosing to save Nancy and Maddox instead.
Even though Selene had managed to come to her senses and move away, she still sustained some scrapes.
Carter was checking Maddox over frantically. After confirming that he was unharmed, het looked over at Nancy. “You alright?”
Nancy shook her head and picked up Maddox, pulling Carter up as well. She checked him over too. “Are you okay?”
Carter shook his head and wrapped them both in his arms, grateful that they were safe.
The scene was hurtful for Selene and Harper to watch. Now, they knew how he felt when they had abandoned him to save Adrian.
Back then, they were still a family legally too. He must have suffered so much more than they were right now.
Meanwhile, the police had already pulled the driver out of the car. To was a familiar face–Adrian!

managed to
In the chase, he stole a car and drove around aimlessly, trying to shake off his stalkers, only to find Selene and Harper.
He didn’t know why they were here. He only knew that they were living much better than he was, even though they were the ones who caused his predicament. Fueled by envy and resentment, he stepped on the gas pedal and tried to run them down.
Unfortunately for him, he missed,
When the police pulled him out of the car, he was screaming and cursing, his expression. twisted. He spat out vile curses at Selene and Carter. “Why weren’t you the ones who died? If it weren’t for you two, I wouldn’t have ended up like this! You ruined my life! Die!”
Selene slapped him hard, furious. She, her daughter, and Carter had almost died because of him. For that, she could kill him!
It had been far too lenient of her to just send him abroad in the first place. He should’ve ended up like Carter, cremated and turned into ashes!
Just as Selene was about to speak, Nancy walked up with a dark expression and kicked Adrian. Then, she made a call.
More police arrived soon. They grabbed Adrian, gagged him, and shoved him into the police.
car.
“Make sure he’s well taken care of in prison!” she snapped.
Then, without looking at Selene and Harper, she turned to leave with Carter and Maddox.
“Carter!” Selene called out instinctively.
Carter didn’t bother to turn toward her. “I thought I made it clear last time, Selene.”
“You don’t have to care about me, but what about Harper?”
Carter turned to look at Harper, who was looking back at him pitifully. “Daddy…”
