Chapter 6
Tears dripped onto the phone screen one after the other. Carter only realized that tears were streaming from his eyes when he touched his face.
He was about to leave this world soon, and he had told himself not to feel hurt anymore. Yet, when he saw these images that were sent to taunt him, Carter still felt as though his heart was being cut apart. It ached so much that it felt like he would suffocate at times.
Everyone knew how much Selene and Harper loved him. Carter had loved them wholeheartedly too.
Although she was from a wealthy background, Selene often found herself feeling lonely. So, Carter would always show up for Selene whenever she needed him.
He would celebrate her birthdays every year. He would bring Selene an umbrella if it rained, and he would wait to go home with her when it was getting late. Whenever Selene felt down or alone, she could just turn around and he would always be there for her.
Carter did everything he could for Harper too. He watched over her and taught her things while she was growing up.

Carter had given Selene and Harper the gentlest, most earnest love. Yet they didn’t reciprocate his earnest feelings with sincerity. He had only received betrayal in return.
He didn’t want to look at those photos anymore, so he turned off his phone.
However, the restless Adrian called Carter instead since he didn’t receive any response. This time, Adrian’s tone was no longer respectful and submissive. Instead, his voice rang with scorn and ridicule.
“Mr. Grant, I know you’ve seen the photos. For the past year, Ms. Selene and Ms. Harper have spent much longer time with me than the times they were with you.
“You shouldn’t be disillusioned into thinking that they still loved you. If they did, why would- they be meeting me? You should hurry and leave them if you know better.”
He was right. If Selene and Harper still loved Carter, why would they be meeting Adrian?
He said nothing. Instead, Carter simply recorded what Adrian said and ended the call.
When Selene came into the room, she could see Carter lying on the bed. His eyes were red as if he had been crying. Her heart dropped. She hurried over and cradled Carter’s face in her hands. to look at him closely.
“Carter, why were you crying? Did something happen?”
Carter stared at her quietly for quite some time. He had no idea his wife was actually this good at acting.
He drew a long breath. “It’s nothing. I just came across a few photos and videos. The content was very touching.”
Selene breathed a sigh of relief and lightly brushed her finger against his nose. “What kind of photos and videos were so touching that they made you cry?”
Carter picked up his phone and held it out to her. Do you want to see them?”
Selene smiled and said alright. When she was about to take the phone from Carter, the phone on her lap vibrated.
She glanced at the screen of her phone and looked at Carter a little hesitantly.
“Carter, it’s a call from work. I…”
Carter pretended as though he didn’t notice Adrian’s that had appeared on her phone screen. He lowered his phone. “It’s alright. You should handle your work, then. I’m going to sleep
anyway.”
The sky was bright and clear on the day Carter was discharged from the hospital. As the leaves moved in the breeze, the shadows on the floor seemed to dance. The view outside looked like at
work of art.
Harper held Carter’s hand and skipped down the steps.
“Daddy, you’re finally getting discharged. You have no idea, but I haven’t been able to pay attention in my classes recently because of how much I’m worried about you.”
After getting into the car, Selene grabbed a light blanket and draped it over Carter’s legs. “It’s a little windy today, Carter. Be careful not to catch a cold.”
Harper copied her mother and slipped a cushion behind Carter’s back.
The two of them seemed to have noticed he was feeling down since they were rather quiet that
day.
Harper happened to have remembered something just then. She lightly tugged Selene’s sleeve and said softly, “Mommy, aren’t we supposed to visit the Forrhe Church today?”
Selene took out her phone and checked the calendar. “It is today. Well, we’ll drop Daddy at
home first
“I’ll go with you to visit the church.” Carter, who had been keeping his eyes closed, opened. them and interrupted the conversation.
Selene and Harper responded almost simultaneously, “No!”
Harper threw her arms around him. “You just got better recently, Daddy. It’s a long way up to the church. I’m worried about you. You should let Mommy and I do it.”

after all. She was horrified when she saw Carter ending up in at bloodied state due to the crash back then.
Selene had a look of disapproval on her face too. Harper’s right. You just got better. We can’t possibly let you go on such a long hike.”
Carter was unusually insistent. “You guys went there to pray for me. So, I should go along with
you to visit the place too.”
In the end, Selene and Harper brought Carter to Forrhe Church since they couldn’t argue against him.
The Forthe Church was built deep in the mountains and far away from the city. It
It was usually quiet and peaceful there, with only the occasional sounds of people reciting prayers or the sound of a bell chiming.
A huge golden statue of a saint stood in the church’s main building. The saint had a kind. expression carved on his face, as if he was watching over his followers and visitors.
Carter knelt on a cushion and silently prayed to the saint. “I hope never to see Selene Miller and Harper Miller ever again, not in this life or any other lifetime!”
Beside him, Selene and Harper did the same. Yet, they prayed that the three of them would always be together and not face any harm.
After giving their prayers, the three of them greeted the bishop and asked for guidance.
The bishop stared at Selene and Harper. He shook his head and said nothing except, “God bless you.”
Then, he turned his gaze toward Carter and stared at him for a while. “Your wish will be granted.”
