At night, the system that had been dormant for quite some time popped up before Carter’s eyes rather abruptly.
‘Carter, you have three days left until you leave this world. Please make the necessary preparations.”
Carter nodded. “I understand.”
He looked out the window at the full moon, which was slowly being engulfed by the dark
clouds.
It would be happening soon. Soon enough, Carter could leave this world permanently. He would not have to see Selene or Harper ever again.
As he thought about that, his mouth curled into a slight smile.
Three days before he was to leave this world, Carter destroyed every single trace he had ever made. He had spent at least ten years in this world. He managed to fill up several boxes with all of the things that were related to him.
The first thing he put in the box was a language test paper from his high school days. There was nothing special about the test paper itself. What made it different was a line of words. Selene had written on the paper.
“Carter is Selene’s one and only love.”
The second thing he placed inside the box was the ring Selene gave him the day she proposed, Carter could never forget the expression she had on her face as she slid the ring onto his ring finger.
The CEO, who came from an affluent background and enjoyed a pampered life, buried her face. in Carter’s nape. She was crying a little as she repeated over and over again, “Carter, you’re finally mine!”
Carter had carefully kept each and every item in those boxes. He was planning to share the stories he had of these items with their grandchildren when he and Selene were older.
However, there was no need for that now.
He built a fire just outside the villa’s garden and threw all those things into the fire. As the fire burned fiercely, he turned around and walked away without sparing it another glance.
Two days before Carter was to leave this world, he saved a copy of the photos and video Adrian had sent him and the phone recording on a USB drive.
Then, he took a cab to the center that managed the city’s digital billboards and passed the USB
drive to a staff member.
“Please display the contents of this USB drive on all of the digital billboards you have around the city the day after tomorrow and keep them on replay.”
The staff member took a quick glance at the contents. There was a look of bewilderment in his eyes. He had a hard time forming a sentence as he stuttered, “M–Mr. Grant, are you sure about
this?”
Carter looked completely calm and collected. “Yes, I am. When you display the contents, help me add one line on top of everything.
“Just write, Carter Grant wishes that Selene Miller, Harper Miller, and Adrian Jennings will live happily ever after as a family of three.”
The final day before Carter was leaving this world happened to be Selene and his fifth wedding anniversary.
Five years ago, Selene wore a white veil and proposed to Carter on the rooftop of their high school building. Countless drones hovered in the air, forming various patterns in the sky. The proposal even became a hot topic that went viral online.
The two of them had promised to celebrate their wedding anniversary at that spot every year.
On that day, Carter came downstairs and found that Selene hadn’t left for work as she usually would. Harper didn’t head to the kindergarten either. They were sitting on the couch and waiting for Carter with gentle smiles on their faces.
Carter looked at them for a brief while. After they had breakfast, all three of them headed out.
Since the students were having summer vacation, there were only three of them walking in the expansive school compound.
Selene was holding Carter’s hand with her left hand and Harper’s with her right. Anyone would be envious of this happy, lovely family of three.
“Daddy! Daddy, tell me your and Mommy’s stories!”
Selene’s mouth turned up in a gentle smile. She was about to say something, but the shrill sound of her phone’s ringtone ruined the peaceful and leisurely atmosphere.
Carter didn’t even have to guess who it was.
Firstly, it was because that was the ringtone Selene had designated specifically for Adrian. Secondly, Adrian had sent him a message this morning.
“So what if it’s your wedding anniversary? Should I show you? Once I give them a call, they’ll throw you aside and come running to keep me company.”
Carter merely scoffed when he read the message. After that, he took a screenshot of the message and sent it to the digital billboard center’s staff.
“Please put this up on the billboards too.”
