Chapter 7
Mark’s uncle frantically tried to deny any involvement.
“Commander, I never said that! The boy’s lying! We’re not even close relatives!”
Commander Quinn snorted, “Your neglect of the community and protection of a local bully has already been reported. You’ll be under investigation.”
The uncle collapsed to the ground, cursing Mark for ruining him and threatening to
divorce Mark’s aunt.
The villagers gossiped plenty before finally dispersing after the drama.
Commander Quinn had brought many groceries and canned goods as welcome gifts for my family.
My parents were overwhelmed, and my brothers were overjoyed.
With Commander Quinn as witness, Tom proposed to hold a proper wedding ceremony for
- me.
My parents had completely changed their tune, treating Tom better than their own sons. They agreed to everything he said, a far cry from when they had called him useless.
I took the opportunity to ask Tom to convince my parents to let my sister divorce.
Tom assured me that if Mark was convicted, my sister’s divorce would surely be granted, and she would get custody of both girls.
My sister finally relaxed.
She held my hand and sighed, “Little sister, you’re the lucky one. I was always jealous of
you
and said hurtful things. You don’t hold it against me, do you?”
I shook my head. In this family, my sister and I were in the same boat. We should be closest to each other.
Commander Quinn urged us to go home, promising to visit my parents another time.
I carried Robert and got in the car with Tom.
My sister, limping with Victoria and Grace in her arms, followed our car.
As a disabled woman with two children and divorced, in a family that favored sons, she might not be able to stay in the village.
I discussed with Tom about taking my sister and her daughters with us. My sister wasn’t stupid. In her previous life, she had helped her farmer husband build a successful business. In the city, with our support, she could learn a trade in a few years to support herself and her children. Plus, she had saved the Quinn family’s heir! We couldn’t abandon her.

Chapter 7
Tom, always gentle and considerate, agreed.
At the military compound, after settling my sister, Tom took me to meet his mother.
Mrs. Quinn was a former army performer, beautiful and elegant.
She didn’t even look at me, speaking only to Tom.
“Tom, now that you’re in college, you can divorce the wife you had to marry during your time in the countryside. Everyone’s getting divorced these days. Your Uncle James’s daughter, Emily, also got into college. I think she’d make a better daughter–in–law for our family.”
Tom’s tone was firm: “Mom, what are you saying? Sarah is the only wife I’ll ever have. Besides, she’s not only given our family a son, but she’s pregnant again!”
Mrs. Quinn finally looked at me properly.
“Oh my, you’re so big already. Tom, our family has always had only one son. After I had you, I couldn’t conceive again. You haven’t been home for months. Are you sure it’s yours?” Hearing Mrs. Quinn’s words, I immediately picked up Robert and headed for the door.
“If the Quinn family doesn’t want sons, I’ll find a family that does. When the time comes, all three babies in my belly can call some other lucky old lady grandma!”
Mrs. Quinn quickly blocked my way.
“What did you say? You’re carrying three?”
Tom explained, “When we came back, Dad was concerned about Sarah’s pregnancy and took her to the base hospital for a check–up. The doctor said Sarah is carrying rare triplets!”
