Chapter 8
The car behind us honked cautiously as the green light turned on.
Pierce placed both hands on the steering wheel and pressed the accelerator, continuing forward. “My three brothers are always watching me. I have to make the Porthcawl Town project a success.”
I could hear the ruthless determination in his tone.
When we reached my place, Pierce leaned out the window to glance at the name of the neighborhood.
As I was about to leave, I could sense a hint of something ambiguous in his gaze. I knew he wanted to say something more, but I just gave him a polite smile and left.
That evening, Joshua urgently asked me to transfer money, claiming that Quincey was in a coma at the hospital and needed a large sum for treatment.
I blocked him.
The next morning, I spotted him and Selene from a distance, anxiously scanning for me outside my office building.
It was the morning rush hour, and people were bustling in and out.
I called Trevor and told him I wouldn’t be coming to the office today. I was going on an offsite with Pierce.
I walked 30 feet in the opposite direction, away from the crowd. Still, Selene caught up to
- me.
She grabbed my hair, and her eyes were red with rage. “You caused Quincey to end up in the hospital, and now you think you can just run away?”
Joshua, panting heavily, reached me and tried to go through my bag. “Where’s the money? Hand it over.”
I kicked backward, and my sharp high heel landed in a bundle of flesh.
Selene yelped in pain, clutching her thigh.
As I turned around, I yanked my bag back. “Joshua, Selene, this is on you. You never taught Quincey to be practical. Instead, you pushed her into unrealistic dreams of marrying into wealth.
“I know you hope for her to do well and wish I’d end up a beggar, but the opposite is true now.”

Selene gritted her teeth at my words. Her face twisted with fury, as if she wanted to tear me apart.
“If you want to save her, you could sell your house. Though it’s shabby, you could still get around 200 thousand dollars for it.”
Joshua pointed at me and cursed, calling me an ingrate. “If we sell the house, where will we live?”
“That has nothing to do with me. You never cared about me anyway,” I retorted. I put my heels back on and walked to the curb to hail a cab.
At that moment, someone shoved me hard from behind. I stumbled, falling into the street. Selene’s voice echoed coldly, “Bitch, all your money will be ours if you die!”
A car sped toward me. I saw the driver’s eyes widen. The tires screeched as they burned with the smell of rubber.
A familiar fear gripped me, and I froze on the road.
Just as the car was about to hit me, a black sports car shot out from behind. It crashed into the other vehicle and forced it backward.
I stared blankly as Pierce stepped out of the car. He urgently asked if I was okay.
A crowd began to gather, though most were more interested in his Aston Martin than me. My body went limp, and I lacked the strength to stand up.
Pierce supported me and led me into a nearby café. “I’ll handle things outside. Take your time to calm down here.”
The TV was playing the morning news.
Lyon Group, along with 12 other major companies, had reached a partnership with Holden Group. The news story featured Scarlett, holding Pierce’s arm, while Eliot and Franco showed her deep respect.
In their world, a woman could only earn respect through her abilities and family background. Those who existed to please others would eventually be reduced to playthings.
Half an hour later, Pierce returned. He told me Selene had run away, but the police were looking for her.
“Shall I take you home?” Pierce naturally took my hand.
At that moment, the café was empty, and the staff were outside watching the accident scene. No one was paying attention to us.
I pulled my hand away, saying I was fine and could go back on my own.

Pierce gently adjusted my shoulder and looked into my eyes. “With your skills, you could easily be a director at Holden Group.
“My marriage to Scarlett is just a business alliance. Without her, my position at Holden Group would be unstable. I can give you everything other than the title of my wife.”
Perhaps the time he spent with Danielle was when Pierce was happiest, so he was doing everything he could to reclaim those memories.
