It was said that after Peyton was rushed to the hospital, the baby could not be saved. Devastated, she demanded two million dollars in compensation from Christian.
Meanwhile, Christian’s company faced an even more severe financial crisis. Following the scandal, most of his investors withdrew their funds, forcing him to lay off a significant number of employees.
Bankruptcy loomed on the horizon.
What I did not expect was for Christian to seek me out less than a week after Peyton’s miscarriage.
I was at a restaurant near the hotel, buying baby food for Juni, when a disheveled Christian appeared in front of me. He looked like he had aged ten years.
He reached out, trying to grab my sleeve. “Shiloh, come back with me. Everything’s been taken care of.”
I stepped back quickly. “You need to understand something–we’re divorced!”
Ignoring my words, Christian pulled two small toys out of his pocket and offered them with a forced smile. “No matter what, I’m still Juni’s father. You can’t let her grow up without a dad, can you?”
Juni was my greatest weakness, but that did not mean I would allow the man who had once drugged her to remain in her life.
I refused to engage further and turned to leave.
Christian’s emotions flared, and he grabbed my arm tightly.
Oh Jackson! Don’t leave! I’ve lost my child, my company is on the verge of bankruptcy, and you’re all I have left. You can’t abandon me now.”
I laughed bitterly. “Now, you think of me? What am I, a convenient backup plan?”
Our scuffle caught the attention of passersby, who gathered around us. Some well- meaning bystanders tried to step in, but Christian’s deranged behavior frightened them.
“She’s my wife!” Christian shouted at the crowd. “It’s my right to take her home! I’ll kill anyone who dares to intervene!”
In my despair, help came from an unexpected source–Peyton’s family.
Of course, they did not come to rescue me out of goodwill.
Peyton’s parents, Timothy Sullivan and Mabel Lee, arrived with a group of relatives, separating me from Christian. They then surrounded Christian, clearly with their own agenda.
