Everyone gasped at the sight, imagining what
the woman went through before dying.
I just watched everyone, with my rotting body
and the baby, my lips trembling, with deep
despair in my eyes.
The police cordoned off the area. After
determining who owned the house, and
<
verifying the DNA, they called Jake.
“Mr. Anderson, we found your wife…”
Jake cut him off, his voice cold.
“Where is she?”
Even now, he didn’t care about my safety,
about my baby.
The air froze for a second. Jake’s coldness
was burned into my memory.
Resentment, pain, despair… I felt cold, every
bone frozen, pain tearing me apart.
Six years. Six years, from dating in college to
marrying. I had loved Jake for six years.
く
He asked me not to leave, so I turned down
the offer from that company to marry him.
I helped him start his business, giving it
everything I had.
He used to be kind and thoughtful, but
everything changed when Brianna moved to
town.
I thought the baby would help our
relationship.
I didn’t know he wouldn’t care about me, he
wouldn’t care about the baby either.
The officer was stunned, not expecting that
reaction.
He paused carefully:
<
He paused, carefully:
“She’s at the cabin.”
“I’m sorry to tell you, Mrs. Anderson has
passed away.”
The air froze. Jake was silent.
“What? That’s impossible.”
His voice shook, but he regained his
composure, and said, “Officer, Sarah must
have left. How could she be dead? Are you
sure?”
“Sir, your wife was locked in the cabin. She
died during childbirth.”
“What? No way!”
The officer shook his head.
“Mr. Anderson, how long has it been since
you talked to your wife? The door was locked
from the outside!”
“We’re trying to figure out who locked the
door, to see if it was murder!”
“Impossible, she’s pregnant. She can’t be
dead!”
“No way!”
The officer held his phone as Jake went
crazy.
He was silent for a second, then he said:
く
“Mr. Anderson, please come here as soon as
you can.”
Chapter 2
A few hours later, the familiar car pulled up.
Jake and Brianna hurried to the scene.
Looking at their fancy clothes, compared to
my death, my heart ached.
Why did I have to go through this after all?
My nose stung. I saw Jake sweating, and his
eyes asked:
“Officer, I’m Jake. Are you sure? Sarah was
fine, pregnant. How could she be locked in a
room, dead?”
<
He was trying to stay calm, but his voice
shook.
“Yeah, right.”
Brianna helped, avoiding eye contact.
“Mr. Anderson, we identified the body. It’s
your wife, Sarah.”
The officer looked up, looked at them, and
said, “We’re investigating. Locking a pregnant
woman in a room like that, it could be
murder.”
“Impossible!”
Brianna immediately turned pale, sounding
guilty.
<
I almost lost it.
It was her.
Jake and the officer looked at her, confused.
The officer stared at her. “Are you Brianna?”
Brianna stepped back, asking Jake for help.
But he was flustered, and didn’t notice.
She bit her lip. “Yes.”
