Chapter 5
Through the plane’s window, the city grew smaller and smaller until it finally disappeared from view.
For the first time, I truly felt like I was leaving.
I wondered what expression Luther would show when he realized I was gone. Would it be one of shock? Or perhaps he would feel relieved that he had finally gotten rid of me.
From what I could recall, we had been inseparable lovers and perfectly synchronized work partners. We were the model couple everyone envied.
I remembered how, after my parents passed away, he had held me and said, “I’ll take good care of you. From now on, I’ll be your family.”
How had that turned into “Tabitha couldn’t possibly leave me because her parents are dead “? How did his compassion and sympathy for me become the very reason he believed I couldn’t walk away from our relationship?
Those thoughts gave me a headache. I didn’t want to dwell on them anymore.
I had read online that the best way to deal with a relationship that made one unhappy was to end it. Thus, I closed my eyes and waited for the plane to carry me to another country.
When the plane landed, I grabbed my luggage and began walking forward. Soon, I heard a voice calling out my name.
I turned in surprise to see Uncle David, who was holding a sign and calling out to me enthusiastically. Beside him was my elderly grandmother, Ivy Mason, in a wheelchair.
Uncle David hadn’t changed much from what I remembered, and Grandma’s eyes were as warm and loving as ever.
“Tabby, let me take a good look at you!” Grandma exclaimed fondly and took my hands in hers. Soon, her eyes welled up with tears. “My dear Tabby, you’ve suffered so much. From now on, you’ll live with us. No one will ever bully you again.”
She held my hands tightly, unwilling to let go. I hadn’t told them what had happened between me and Luther, but perhaps my haggard appearance gave it away. Grandma could also have figured it out due to the inexplicable bond between a grandmother and granddaughter.
1 smiled and nodded.
Uncle David laughed heartily and said, “You should’ve come back sooner. After your parents passed away, you stayed back over there all alone. Mom was so worried about you.”

them all because of Luther.
So, I made them a promise. “Grandma, Uncle David, I’m not leaving anymore. I’ll stay with you from now on.”
Luther had always assumed I was an orphan, but I still had my uncle and grandmother. I had even mentioned visiting them a few times before, but he had never paid attention. He didn’t care, nor was he interested.
When I turned my phone back on, a flood of missed calls and voice messages poured in. My phone kept vibrating non–stop.
Uncle David frowned and asked, “Is that guy still bothering you?”
“It’s fine, Uncle David. I’ll handle it,” I replied.
Hence, I answered the phone.
The first thing that reached my ears was yelling and a barrage of accusations. “Where the hell did you go, Tabitha? How dare you ignore my calls and messages? You caused all this trouble for Sasha, and you just go off somewhere?
“She’s still crying right now! I’m giving you one hour to get back to the office and apologize to her in person. Explain to everyone that it was your jealousy and hatred that led
to those false accusations!”
In the background, Sasha’s pitiful and dramatic sobbing could be heard. “It’s okay. Let the others say whatever they want. I don’t blame Tabitha. I only blame myself for being so incompetent and making you worry so much…”
Her words only riled Luther up even more. “Did you hear that, Tabitha? Come back and apologize immediately! If you do it sincerely enough, I’ll pretend none of this ever happened. Otherwise, I’ll fire you right now!”
I let out a cold laugh, finding it all quite amusing. “Mr. Jansen, I should remind you that we’re divorced. So, we have nothing to do with each other anymore.”
There was a pause, as if he suddenly recalled signing the divorce agreement.
After taking a moment to compose himself, Luther insisted, “I know we’re divorced. This is your boss giving an order to you, an employee. After what you did, don’t you think you should come back and apologize?”
I remained calm as I said patiently, “Listen, Mr. Jansen–if my memory didn’t fail me, you also signed my resignation letter along with the divorce papers. So, we’re no longer boss and employee. I have no obligation to respond to your messages or calls.”
Luther was stunned to hear this. “When did you tender your resignation? Did I even give
