Chapter 8
Sasha kept repeating the things Luther had done for her as if trying to prove that his love
for her was real.
But Luther shook off Sasha’s hand as she tried to link her arm with his. “Enough, Sasha! Stop clinging to me. The only reason I was kind to you or did those things was because you reminded me of the Tabitha I first met.”
Then he turned to me and said, “Tabitha, you were so innocent and full of life back then. But I got used to being with you, and we lost that sense of excitement over time. That was when Sasha came into my life, and I couldn’t hold back.
“But I can’t let go of the years we’ve shared. Come back with me, and let us start over again. Pretty please, Tabby?”
I couldn’t believe how shameless he was. To say he had seen his past love for me in someone else and do it so brazenly… It was utterly absurd.
Sasha stood frozen, wiping her tears as she slowly processed his words. “Then what about our child? If you don’t care about the baby, I’ll jump right now!”
She ran to the edge of the bridge, looking down at the raging river below.
I hadn’t expected them to have a child together. At that moment, I felt nothing but regret that I had loved someone as vile as Luther.
Luther felt conflicted. I could tell how much he was struggling internally before finally speaking up again. “I’m sorry, Tabby. Sasha is innocent in all this. I need to take care of her first.”
His decision didn’t surprise me.
And so, he left with Sasha and went back to our home country.
My life, however, remained largely unchanged,
Seeing how routine and predictable my days had become, Uncle David became worried that I might get bored. He insisted on introducing me to a friend, despite my many refusals.
“Tabby, you know this friend of mine. He’s mentioned you to me several times before,” he said, dragging me along.
I went to meet his friend out of curiosity and was surprised to see that it was my playmate, Dylan Foster.
childhood
When we had been kids, we used to sneak out to play together all the time. We had been close friends until we had parted ways in middle school due to family circumstances.

Chapter 8
“Long time no see, Tabitha,” Dylan greeted me. His warm smile and familiar face overlapped with the cheerful, carefree boy I remembered from my youth.
We strolled around the lake for a long time, catching up on how our lives had been. To my surprise, Dylan had never married even after all these years.
I thought we might find it awkward to talk to each other after so much time apart, but it turned out to be natural and easy. Somehow, we had a lot to talk about, and our conversation flowed endlessly and effortlessly.
Dylan and I shared similar interests–taking strolls and attending concerts. Our shared interests caused our lives to overlap more and more.
One evening, we took a walk through the streets after sharing a few drinks. We were both a little tipsy, so our steps were unsteady.
“Why haven’t you settled down yet, Dylan? Isn’t your father worried about this?” I asked curiously.
Dylan’s face turned red all the way to his ears. His speech became awkward. He stuttered, I… I’ve been… uh… waiting for someone.”
His reaction only piqued my curiosity. “Who? Does she know how you feel?”
Before he could answer, I stumbled and nearly fell. Luckily, Dylan caught me by wrapping an arm around my shoulder to steady me.
But in the next moment, another hand shot out and forcefully slapped Dylan’s arm away from me.
